Volunteers needed at The Royal London Hospital

11 September 2012

The Friends of The Royal London Hospital charity has launched a new recruitment drive for enthusiastic volunteers to join the Friends Mobile Trolley team at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

Affectionately called the ‘Trolley Dollies’ this volunteering team is a vital part of the hospital’s patient care, bringing home comforts and a friendly chat to patients’ bedsides.  Chairman of Friends of The Royal London Hospital, Dr Anthea McEwan says: “We are looking for enthusiastic people aged 16 and over from East London who are happy to donate a few hours of their week to help take a trolley around the wards and make a real difference to the patients, some of whom may have to remain in hospital for several days or more.”

“This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who is looking for a fun and rewarding way to give back to their local community. Our volunteers work in pairs so you can join up with a friend. We are particularly looking for people who are available on weekday mornings between 8am and 12pm.”

Friends of The Royal London Hospital, established in 1979, is a charity dedicated to improving hospital amenities for both patients and staff.  The charity is made up of volunteers, hospital staff (past and present) and members of the local community.

The charity’s aim is to help improve patients’ experience by making the hospital as much as a ‘home away from home’ as possible and the Mobile Trolley which provides patients with access to confectionary and toiletries is an integral part of this. The charity also helps to fundraise for medical equipment and this year raised £13,500 to purchase a state-of-the-art OXYLOG 3000 Life Support Ventilator for The Royal London Hospital Accident and Emergency Department.

If you are interested in finding out how you or someone you know can get involved please contact Friends of The Royal London Hospital, Ann Norcott by email: ann.norcott@bartshealth.nhs.uk

In other activities, three intrepid runners Diane Barnes, Shirin Ali and Tom Kopelman in their fourth run, together with twenty six other volunteers, completed the British 10K powered by Nike™ + London Run representing Friends of The Royal London Hospital. To date this year our runners have raised over £5,600 and the sponsorship money is still rolling in!
