The Barts Health Orthopedic Centre for planned surgery is based at the Gateway Surgical Centre at Newham Hospital. It combines state-of-the-art facilities with a leading surgical team to deliver high-quality care for patients who are having planned orthopaedic surgery (e.g. a knee replacement).

By bringing together decades of experience with the latest in surgical techniques and modern technology, it helps patients to get back on their feet as soon and as safely as possible.

About us

The planned orthopaedic surgery centre at the Gateway Surgical Centre provides a large portion of the planned orthopaedic surgeries delivered by Barts Health. This includes inpatient and outpatient surgery. Each year, around 2500 procedures are carried out at the centre, 1000 of which are major joint replacements.

Orthopaedic sub-specialties delivered by the team at the centre include hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, hand, spine, limb reconstruction, and foot and ankle procedures. The complexity of work carried out ranges from simple day-cases to the most complex joint and limb reconstruction procedures.

Before surgery, we offer our patients and their families a free, educational session, to help them understand how to make a speedy and safe recovery from surgery. We also have a dedicated smartphone app to help you navigate your journey with us from the comfort of your own home.
