The East London Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Prevention Group

What we do

At ELoPE, our key aim is to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in our local community, in partnership with the British Heart Foundation, and the people we serve.

Newham, Tower Hamlets and other surrounding boroughs have some of the highest levels of childhood obesity and diabetes on a national level and this is an effort from the local healthcare community towards trying to address a problem that is reaching epidemic levels, with potentially enormous future impact on the health of the population.

It's a team effort and we couldn’t possibly do this without the support of our patients, partners and the community. Working with schools and local businesses, ELoPE want to ensure a healthier future for our area and that starts here.

Primary School Healthy Heart Talks

ELoPE- Virtual Healthy Heart talks for Year 6s

After the success of the last few years, ELoPE  are delighted to be offering free Healthy Heart talks to all primary schools in the borough.

Delivered virtually by healthcare specialists, including doctors from Barts Hospital, the sessions aimed at year 6 children are fun, engaging and interactive, educating children about the importance of heart health by looking at eating healthily, not smoking and keeping active.

By shaping a healthier future for the children, we aim to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in our population, where the rates of heart disease are higher than anywhere else in London.

CPR Training for Secondary School teachers

Become a CPR Champion for your school!

CPR training is becoming mandatory across all secondary schools in England. To support this, ELoPE, in collaboration with the resus team, will offer free CPR training to secondary school teachers in the Barts catchment area. This training will give teachers the confidence to deliver CPR training to their pupils.

Training dates will be offered to secondary school teachers from Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest. Sessions will be held at Barts NHS Trust or in the local community. To find out more or book onto a session, please email

At ELoPE, the East London CVD Prevention Group at the Barts Heart Centre, we are leading on improving heart health & lowering cardiovascular disease risk in the community, in partnership with the British Heart Foundation, our local schools and community.

City Talks for a healthier city workforce

To improve the health of our City workers, ELoPE have launched webinars for the local business community on cardiovascular disease prevention, led by our Consultant Cardiologists. The aim is to reduce the CVD risk in the local community and within the City workforce.

The first in the series of webinars is entitled ‘How to Prevent a Heart Attack’.

If you want to:

  • look after your staff
  • improve wellbeing
  • reduce sickness and largely preventable long-term condition.

Please get in touch to book a session.

There is no set fee, but firms will be asked to make a donation in return for the session delivery to help raise funds for this, and all other ELoPE projects, such as the Healthy Heart school talks. All funds raised go directly into running the programme (Consultants give up their time free to support this important cause).

High Risk Clinic

The High Risk CVD clinic at Barts, is a specialist service to diagnose and treat people who may be at particularly high risk of heart disease such as:

  • those with very high cholesterol levels
  • those with lots of heart disease in their family
  • those who have had heart disease at a young age.

It is run by a team consisting of consultants in cardiology and diabetes as well as a specialist nurse and pharmacist, who offer the latest treatments and prevention therapies available.

Staff drop-in

It has been a long-standing ambition of the ELoPE group to establish a staff drop-in clinic for cardiovascular disease health screening. At ELoPE we recognise that we need to look after our staff as well as we look after our patients. Now, more than ever, we need to look after the people who look after you.

Barts has a large and busy workforce including a high number of people from BAME backgrounds where risk may be increased.

A survey was recently conducted with staff trust-wide to gauge what our workforce needs. The pilot is due to start in March 2021. Watch this space…
