Dermatology: A guide to taking an image

This leaflet provides guidance on how to take images of your skin area.  

 

The better the photos, the better the advice we can give you

It is important to get good quality photographs and a clear image of your skin area so that the doctors can make a correct diagnosis.

Please send in 4 to 5 good quality photos (these are best taken by someone else if possible)

The following instructions are simple and easy tips to ensure your photo is of good quality:

Steps to taking a good quality photo:
 

1. Photos should be taken in flat light for example by a window or an open door without sunlight streaming in.
2. Include one image that should be from a distance to see where the lesion is on your body.
3. The rest should be taken from directly above the lesion, so that it can be seen flat on. These should be focussed and clearto see. 
4. At least one should be close up so that the texture of the lesion can be seen.

Tips: For close ups, the camera should be held steady, tap the square and wait a few seconds for the camera to focus before taking the picture.

If the photos aren’t good enough when you look at them, please take some more until you are happy with them.

Image type 1: Locator image

This should be an image that clearly identifies where on the body the lesion is located. This image will allow the Consultant to gauge the patient’s background skin type, texture and level of skin damage. The entire limb, head or torso should be visible.

Image types 2 and 3. Close up image

This should be a close up image of the lesion, the lesion should be centrally located and the surface detail easily visible e.g. scaling/crusting in sharp focus. It is important to ensure the image is taken in good lighting.

Your GP will provide the details of where to send the images electronically.

Large print and other languages
This information can be made available in alternative formats, such as easy read or large print, and may be available in alternative languages, upon request. For more information, speak to your clinical team.
