Barts Health is a smoke-free health provider. This means that smoking or use of electronic cigarettes is not permitted anywhere on our sites/grounds. That includes our hospital and health centre buildings, as well as their grounds, doorways and entrances. We also ask you respectfully not to smoke when hospital staff visit your home; whilst staff are in your home it is their working environment and should be smoke-free. As a healthcare provider it’s important we do everything we can to reduce smoking among patients, visitors, staff and the risk of harm to others.
Expert advice, support and encouragement
Our free NHS stop smoking service provides expert advice, support and encouragement from specialist practitioners to help you stop smoking for good. Your doctor, nurse or therapist should ask about your smoking status and offer a referral to a stop smoking service. They can do this using the contact details in your notes. If you are an inpatient, you should also be offered nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to help manage any nicotine cravings you may have while in hospital.
The NHS stop smoking service offers one to one support and the specialist practitioner will talk you through the different nicotine replacement products and other stop smoking medicines available. They can also recommend products or a combination of products to suit you.
The sessions usually start a couple of weeks before you quit so you can prepare for your quit date. To help motivate you, your advisor can measure the levels of carbon monoxide (CO) in your body using a CO monitor. You will notice how the levels of CO drop to the same level as a non-smoker just 24 hours after your last cigarette!
Studies show that you are up to four times more likely to quit with specialist help. Your clinician can make a referral for you to a stop smoking service, or you can self-refer to a service close to your home/work via https://www.nhs.uk/smokefree or you can attend one of our onsite clinics:
