Stewart Russell, Director of Estates and Facilities

After a long career in the military, which included tours of Northern Ireland, the first Gulf War and time in the jungles of Central America, Stewart became a protection officer for global executives. He joined the then Barts and the London NHS Trust in 2002 and became one of the first security management specialists in the health service. He received a commendation from the City of London Police in 2004 for work targeting crimes around St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

In 2006 he became the Trust’s Security and Counter Terrorism Officer specialising in radiation, pathogens and toxins, whilst overseeing numerous government and Royal visits. In 2016 he was made Group Associate Director of Estates and Facilities Management (EFM) with responsibility for compliance and risk. This included advising on security arrangements for the Nightingale Hospital London set up during the Covid pandemic.

He has been Director of Estates and Facilities at St Bartholomew's Hospital since August 2023.
