Maternal Medicine

Our maternal medicine team is made up of obstetricians, specialist physicians and specialist midwives. They can meet with you in advance of pregnancy (pre-pregnancy counselling) to optimise your health and plan your care during your pregnancy. They will assess you and your baby during pregnancy and plan how frequently to see you during the antenatal period and beyond.

Conditions

The Royal London Hospital provides care for women and birthing people with medical conditions. We have specialist clinics and services for women and birthing people with heart conditions, kidney disease, neurological disease, high blood pressure, bowel disease, auto-immune conditions and blood conditions. This means that a joint plan of care is made between obstetrics and medicine which reduces the number of hospital appointments you require.

We aim to keep pregnancy and birth as normal as possible, whilst keeping you and your baby safe. We will talk to you about the different options you have for your care during pregnancy, at the time of delivery and after you have birthed your baby. Care during your birth in the Labour Ward is available for women who would like a natural birth experience with medical expertise close by.
