And the winners are...
Last week, we shined a spotlight our nurses and midwives in a special event held at St Bartholomew’s historic Great Hall and was attended by our chief executive, Alwen Williams, our chair in common, Rt Hon Jacqui Smith, as well as members of our non-executive board and senior leadership teams.
As part of the celebrations, winners of the nursing and midwifery awards were announced in recognition of their amazing achievements in the profession. Amongst our winners for Newham are:
Quality of Care award – Stratford ward
Nurse of the Year 2022 – Mugurel Georgescu, Heather ward. Mugurel was nominated for his clinical ability and initiative in undergoing further education on the care of tracheotomy patients. He went on to use his knowledge to train his colleagues in his own time. Mugurel has also been commended by the senior doctors on call for his prompt escalation and family updates.

Sister Joanah Hove from Heather Ward was nominated for her empathetic and collaborative approach with her colleagues and the wider nursing team.
Maria Dolotina from Stratford Ward started on as a Stratford ward as a volunteer, before progressing as a healthcare and then as a return to practice nurse. She was nominated for her dedication to her work and her welcoming and friendly attitude.
Rubina Shretha from Custom House Ward was commended for her calming demeanour and excellent nursing skills which makes her a highly respected by patients and colleagues in the ward.
Anthonia Onwubuya from Custom House Ward was nominated for her professionalism, kindness and patience towards patients which was recognised by her nominees as “a great asset”.
Midwife of the Year 2022 – Janathara Bushra, band 6 midwife on Maternity Triage and Larch ward. Janathara was recognised for her “exceptional leadership” in her band 6 role. She has continuously demonstrated our WeCare values in her practise and is an approachable, competent and innovative midwife.
Nursing Informatics award – Custom House ward were crowned winners under the leadership of Adama Kamara with support from Band 6 nurses for the seamless implementation of Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) in the clinical area.
Midwifery Informatics award – Stephanie Rymer
Tristram Mills, director of nursing and governance, said: “I only joined the hospital two months ago, but I feel great pride in seeing our nurses and midwives get recognised for their skill, hard work and passion for providing a high standard of care for our patients. Thank you all and well done for your excellent work!”
Simon Ashton, our acting chief executive, added: “I'm so proud of our nurses and midwives for this amazing achievement. They are a great example of those who go above and beyond to provide high-quality care for our local communities, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful. Well done all!”
