Nurse at The Royal London Hospital emergency department

The Royal London is in the heart of east London

With great transport links to central London and beyond

We are a renowned teaching hospital, with an emergency department in both adults and paediatrics. As the home of London’s Air Ambulance, and the hub of the largest network of trauma hospitals across the country, the emergency department is a fast-paced environment, where no two days are the same and the learning opportunities are endless.

Our team of nurses are passionate about their work, and with a great team culture, we were awarded clinical team of the year by The Royal College of Emergency Medicine. With our multi-disciplinary approach to complex cases, and experts in the field, the team has people from a range of backgrounds and with different stories to tell.

With in-house yoga classes, mental health counselling and refreshed break rooms within the ward, staff wellbeing is a priority.

Nurse at Whipps Cross emergency department

Set next to the beautiful Epping Forest

We treat over 152,000 patients a year

Whipps Cross is a fantastic place to work, away from the city centre in a quieter corner of north east London. The city has some of the best public transport systems in the world, so you’re never too far from buzzing central areas like Soho and South Bank.

You’ll feel a sense of community in the local area, and you’ll play your vital part in this community as an A&E nurse in one of the busiest A&E departments in the country. We also provide a full range of general inpatient, outpatient, day care, and maternity services.

You’ll be part of a diverse team making a real difference.

"In all my years working I don’t think I have enjoyed the camaraderie as much as this."

"I have been nursing for 22 years and now lead a team of nurses who I nurture and look after. I love it. I love the adrenaline push I think, and the fact that we really do make a difference when people are in a crisis."

    Arnold, senior charge nurse

  • Nurse at The Royal London Hospital emergency department

"I had such a great experience in two emergency department placements at Barts Health that I decided I want to make my career in ED."

"My proudest moment so far came very recently when I had a very sick patient who needed a lot of intervention in resus. We all worked hard to stabilise that patient for safe transfer to theatre. A few weeks later that same patient walked back into ED to thank us. It’s a privilege isn’t it? Every day we get the chance to make a difference to someone on one of the most critical days in their lives."

Jessica, staff nurse, The Royal London

  • "You never know what is coming through the door so it is different every day."

"That’s why I wanted to be an A&E nurse; I am always learning and making a difference in people’s lives when they need us most."

Cheska, staff nurse, Newham Hospital A&E

  • "With the teamwork and the camaraderie, we are like a family here."

"We can have a laugh and always look after each other, even under immense pressure. If you ask me my most memorable moment, I couldn’t pick just one. What I would say is that we have had patients going through their very worst day and we have managed to make the moment a little better for them, and often saved their lives. That’s really the highlight for me."

"We are a family here, all of us different but all welcome as part of the team."

"I have made lifelong friends here and they have helped with me with advice and support on the training courses for the emergency department and trauma. The managers have also been very supportive and flexible with my rota. I’m a working mum with three children so I really need that support with childcare and arranging my shifts."

Chloe, paediatric sister, Whipps Cross Hospital

  • "I love it because we are such a diverse group of people working in such a diverse community."

"My interest started at 19 when I was a healthcare assistant. I went on to do nursing when I was 26 and did all my placements in A&E. Some of those placements were here at Newham and I just loved the fast pace and the way the team gelled, so I decided this was where I wanted to make my career. I have been here for 15 years now and I still love it."

Shabana, staff nurse, Newham Hospital A&E
