Our new executive board members

Following competitive, open interview processes, Dr Neil MacDonald and John Middleton have been appointed as our substantive divisional director of surgery, cancer and outpatients and director of operations respectively.

Neil comes to Newham Hospital from his current role as director of the perioperative network across Barts Health and having previously been the clinical lead for anaesthetics at The Royal London. He will bring a wealth of expertise and experience to this role, and we look forward to welcoming him to our executive board at the start of November and working with him to further improve our outpatient, cancer and surgery offer.

John has worked in a variety of operational and strategic roles within the NHS since 2015, and for the past two and a half years, has worked as the director of strategy at Newham Hospital, before stepping up as interim director of operations in December 2021. As substantive director of operations, he will continue working with our executive board and wider hospital teams to successfully deliver our operational plan.

Simon Ashton, chief executive of Newham Hospital, said: “I’m so pleased to welcome John and Neil into their respective substantive roles. They are a fantastic addition to the Newham Hospital executive board, and I look forward to working closely with them to provide even better care and experiences for our patients and colleagues alike. Congratulations John and Neil!”
