Raabiah Mughal with the renal team at The Royal London Hospital

A kidney transplant patient at The Royal London Hospital has raised nearly £3,000 for the renal team by making and selling handmade friendship bracelets.

Raabiah Mughal has been under the care of consultant nephrologist, Dr Hamish Dobbie, and the renal team for the past 10 years.

During the Covid-19 lockdown , while undergoing treatment, she began making bracelets to help her stay calm, finding comfort in the creative process during a challenging time.

What began as a creative outlet quickly turned into something much bigger. Raabiah went on to make hundreds of bracelets. She carefully picked each colour combination, with pink as her favourite, and went on to set up her own stall, “Raabiah’s Jazzy Jewellery”, at her local day centre. Before long, her creations were in high demand, with people keen to donate in exchange for one of her bracelets.

At a cheque presentation last month, attended by the renal team, Raabiah shared why the fundraising meant so much to her.

“All the staff have cared for and looked after me. I wanted to give something back," she said.

Over time, her efforts raised just under £3,000 to support the team who have cared for her throughout her treatment.

Dr Dobbie said: “We are incredibly grateful to Raabiah for this wonderful donation. We will work with the family to decide how best to use the money to benefit our patients.”

The funds will go towards supporting the renal service and improving care for future patients at The Royal London Hospital.
