Doctor receives special recognition

Clinical fellow, Dr Marta Patyjewicz has been honoured with a Special Recognition Award by the Mayor of Tower Hamlets for her work in understanding and educating both patients and the local community about the dangers of using nitrous oxide.

The ceremony, hosted by Tower Hamlets Council at the Town Hall in Whitechapel, celebrated women who are striving to create a fairer society.

The use of nitrous oxide has risen sharply in London, with increasing numbers of patients presenting at emergency departments due to suspected overuse. Until recently, however, there was no formal guidance on how to diagnose the condition, and many patients do not disclose their use - often resulting in misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment.

Thanks to research of the Dr Patyjewicz and the nitrous oxide team, new clinical guidelines were developed to provide medics with practical advice and support. This work has been recognised by the Association of British Neurologists and was rapidly adopted as standard medical practice."

Today, GPs and emergency staff across east London are better equipped to recognise the signs of nitrous oxide misuse and can refer patients directly to The Royal London Hospital - ensuring timely and appropriate care.

Dr Patyjewicz has also extended her efforts into the community by hosting “Know the Risks” workshops at schools, youth groups, and mosques, aiming to curb the growing use of this recreational drug.

Upon receiving her award, Dr Patyjewicz said:

“I am proud and honoured to receive the very first Special Recognition Award at the Tower Hamlets Women’s Awards.

“The combination of in-hospital and community support will help our young people understand the dangers of nitrous oxide and support regular users to stop.”
