Clinical oncology training praised

Clinical oncology department at St Bartholomew's

The Clinical Oncology department at St Bartholomew’s Hospital has received a commendation from the Trust Dean after a strong performance in the annual GMC national training survey.

Feedback from resident doctors (formerly referred to as junior doctors) in both 2022 and 2023 noted concerns around workload, feedback and requesting leave which the team have addressed by revamping the registrar workplan and making more opportunities for teaching.

Dr Hamoun Rozati is a consultant in clinical oncology and a Royal College of Radiologists tutor.

He said: "The fantastic feedback we have received from our clinical oncology registrars in the recent GMC survey is testament to the effort everyone in the department has put in to providing such a high standard of training.

"We concentrated on revamping the registrar work plan for a more even division of workload, and regular formal and informal sessions with our registrars to implement changes often throughout the year, rather than waiting for the survey results

"We’ve also concentrated on providing more opportunities for teaching and getting involved in projects, so even though this was previously a strength, we feel this has developed further and contributed to the improved registrar experience with us."

Each year, the General Medical Council run two surveys concurrently, the National Training Survey and the Trainer Survey.

These surveys have been developed to monitor and review the quality of postgraduate medical education and training in the UK, whilst identifying any areas for potential improvements.
