Responsibility for the NHS Nightingale Hospital London | Our news

Responsibility for the NHS Nightingale Hospital London

The Board of Barts Health NHS Trust has agreed to a request from NHS London that we should host the new hospital being built for Covid-19 patients at the ExCeL exhibition centre in Newham.

This means the Trust will take on formal legal responsibility for the operation and governance of the NHS Nightingale Hospital London, working closely with NHS London and the project team that is setting it up with help from NHS colleagues across the capital.

The facility is on schedule to open this week to care exclusively for Covid-19 patients from across the capital and could have a capacity of several thousand beds by the anticipated peak of the coronavirus pandemic next month.

NHS England/Improvement does not have the legal powers to manage a hospital directly, and there is insufficient time to create a new independent legal entity, so the new facility needs to sit within an existing NHS provider.

At Barts Health we have an established and resilient group operating model which could embrace a sixth hospital without detriment to the services the Trust currently offers. In addition, ExCel is situated within our catchment area in East London.

The Trust has a Peak operating plan summary for the Covid-19 pandemic[pdf] 4MB that summarises the plans we have been making. These will need to adapt and change, but its hoped it will provide direction in the weeks ahead.

Alwen Williams, our Group Chief Executive, will be the Accountable Officer for the hospital’s services, and Prof Charles Knight, chief executive of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, has been seconded to lead the management team, which is being assembled from a number of NHS bodies in the capital, including us.

Alwen said: “I am hugely grateful to Charles for taking on this role, and want to thank all our staff who are responding magnificently to the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.”

Ian Peters, chair of Barts Health, said: “we are facing a profound crisis requiring bold and unproven solutions. It is an honour to be asked to embrace the NHS Nightingale at a time of national emergency. We willingly accept the challenge and will finalise arrangements in the next few days.”

Justin Creigh, the current deputy chief executive at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, will become interim chief executive during this period, with director of operations Karen Bates moving to deputy chief executive.

Amazing. How can I join and be part of the team that contributes to covid responsiveness and utilise my skills and expertise.

I am a physiotherapist in Devon with no children or elderly dependents. I would be happy to come and work in the new Nightingale hospital to provide rehab, though I would need to brush up on my respiratory skills. How do I go about applying to work in the Nightingale or elsewhere in London where my skills might be better used than in rural Devon?

Equiniti provide outsourced payroll services to many NHS Trusts and have partnered with NELPC in the past.
Very happy to discuss how we could help ensure these front line colleagues are paid accurately and on time.

    Hello
I think this is an amazing example of what can be done when all are mobilised without bars to solve a crisis.
I have seen TV film of the construction at Excel London.
I find myself naively questioning with so many very ill patients in one space all excreting CoVid virus, whether the microbial air quality in the halls is monitored? The viral load has been implicated as causing more serious disease. Does the air get cleansed before it is either circulated or released into the local atmosphere? It would be reassuring to know that the viruses escaping from the hospital won’t lead to contamination?
Thank you for considering this enquiry and all good wishes with the Nightingale.

  34. Tereza Shortall Wednesday, 1 April 2020 at 12:30 PM

Sorry to bother you, but there is a message going round SM asking children to draw pictures to brighten the Nightingale wards. These will then be laminated and sent to the hospitals. There is great concern around logistics, infection control, work load on staff etc, and NO clarity as to whether this request IS legitimate, or "someone" trying to be a hero, with possibly disastrous consequences.!
Could you please confirm /deny this request? Many thanks and best wishes for your efforts.
    Tereza Shortall

    Hello,
I am a clinically practising chiropractor. I would like to know how to apply to work at the hospital at Excel as I would like to help support the NHS. Can you provide guidance please? I have no major risk factors that would deter me.
As primary healthcare practitioners, chiropractors are trained in respiratory, abdominal and cardiovascular screening and assessing patients vitals, as well as the various orthopaedic and neurological tests used for musculoskeletal conditions. I am sure I would be useful as some sort of support staff. I also previously worked as a nursing assistant in the United States putting myself through college, so have experience here as well. Thank you!

Have you considered an on site laundering facility for washing and drying scrubs at end of shifts? No risk of grubby or infected scrubs leaving the site and possibly contaminating others , eg. families of staff at risk of coronovirus. Scrubs could be washed and dried on site ready for NHS at start of their shifts. No need for ironing in these difficult times. PPE required for those working in the laundry facility.

Hi, I heard on the news that some nurses would like artwork as it makes a big difference to the environment, I’m an abstract painter and could paint large abstracts 6ftx6ft directly onto the walls, things like dots and stripes .., I can do a few in a day... happy for them to be destroyed later. I live in North London so not too far. All Best Wishes Catherine ps. You can look up my work on Instagram catherinebrownpaintings if you would like an idea of what I do, most of the images are large

  79. Elan Neiger Thursday, 2 April 2020 at 12:46 PM

    I represent Door Tablet (door-tablet.com).
We have a product that might be relevant now, called Bed Space. It is a solution for managing beds in hospitals.
This could be useful in the current situation because it streamlines the process of knowing which beds are / aren't free, in real-time.
The head nurse will be able to see an overview from her desktop computer of all the beds in an area. These beds can be managed by devices placed by the beds themselves the moment they are occupied or available.
Would love to speak more and help during this crisis.

    Hi,
I am working for Pulse Bank as a recovery nurse with many years of experience
and because I am over 70 I thought I shouldn't work but after 2 weeks at home I miss the work and the patients desperately. I am one of the fittest people ever to work for the NHS and I wonder if there is a clinical role or administrative role for me at The new Nightingale Hospital. I was the Senior Recovery Sister at the Royal Free. I look forward to hearing from you.

  89. Ally Lewis Thursday, 2 April 2020 at 07:13 PM

Very well done on new build. Could I ask for consideration to patients looking up into the deep dark roof space; very scary when sick and isolated from loved ones. I know this sounds trivial when considering all the other factors that these patients will face. I also beg you to consider the policy of not allowing bedside contact for those patients who are dying; as a mother I would never be able to get over the thought of my child dying scared and alone.
    Kind regards
    Ally lewis

I have recovered from the Virus (symptoms ceased ten days ago) so should have the requisite antibodies, which I feel is beneficial in a potential hotbed of exposure. Please let me know.

We have a device available to detect coronavirus from a distance. It is a Bi-Spectrum Thermal Camera.
Thermal imaging technology and early detection of potential threats has been critical in preventing the spread of coronavirus. The technology has proven to be effective around the world.
The device we offer is capable of detecting elevated body temperatures quickly in crowded areas and alerting facilities of possible infections or health risks. The device provides a live recording of the subjects alongside their thermal image and is able to recognize the slightest changes in body temperature as little as 0.3 degrees Celsius.
Setup of the device is quick, easy, and has a minimal footprint so as not to interfere with the flow of ongoing traffic. Units are available now.
    Look forward to your feedback.
