12 ways to help your NHS this Christmas

On the lead up to Christmas here are 12 ways you can give back to the NHS.

1. Take part in our research

We're always looking for patients who can help us find out which treatments work best for people. If you or someone you know is interested in taking part in reserach, you can find out how to do this on our website, or if you are under the care of a clinical team, you can speak to them.

2. Rethink A&E and find the right treatment

A&E is for serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies. It's important that you don't delay seeking treatment when you need it. If you think you need medical help, but you are unsure where to go or what you need, 111 can tell you what to do next. Find more information about accessing the right care.

3. Manage your appointments

We’re making hospital appointments fairer. If you can’t make you’re appointment, let us know so that we can offer your slot to someone else and find a time that works better for you. If you miss two appointments without telling us, you may be discharged back to your GP – learn more here.

4. Be kind to our staff

We understand that being in hospital can be stressful, but the impact of violence and abuse towards our staff is significant and will never be accepted. We encourage our staff to report every incident and some staff may wear body worn cameras to protect everyone.

5. Support our charity

Barts Charity is your dedicated charity who support care excellence and fund world-leading research across our hospital. You can show your support through donating, taking part in fundraising events, or by leaving a gift in your will.

6. Give blood

Giving blood saves lives, and donors from all backgrounds are needed to ensure the right blood is available for those who need it. Currently, more donors of Black Heritage are needed to help those with sickle cell disease, a serious and life threatening blood disorder. Give blood in your area.

7. Make your organ donation decision known

Organ donation will only go ahead with the support of your family, and your clinicians will never proceed with organ donations if your loved ones object. That’s why it’s essential to make your decision known to your families when you register your decision.

8. Work with us

At Barts Health, we will take you on a diverse, exciting and rewarding career journey. We can offer you an excellent package, flexible working, exclusive benefits and the opportunity to gain unparalleled experience in one of our innovative hospitals. Find our current opportunities.

9. Be Green

There is a direct link between the health of our planet and the health of our people. Choose more sustainable options this Christmas.

10. Volunteer with us

Our volunteers are inspiring, caring and passionate individuals who support the day-to-day services we provide in our hospitals. Find a volunteering role that suits your skillset and interests.

11. Look after yourself and your loved ones

Christmas can be a difficult time of year for some people, and it’s important that you check in on your loved ones’ wellbeing. If you or someone close to you is experiencing mental health problems, there are a number of different typed of support available. Find the right support for you here.

12. Share your thanks with our staff

Recognising our staff can help raise their morale and bring them joy to know their hard work has made a difference. If you wish to thank or recognise any of our staff, you can send a thank you message or nominate someone great for a Barts Health Heroes award .

Thank you and Merry Christmas!
