Amanjit Jhund to leave Whipps Cross for Kent trust chief executive role

Whipps Cross CEO

Amanjit Jhund is to step down from leading Whipps Cross Hospital to take up the role of chief executive at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.

He will join one of North Kent’s largest hospital trusts, serving more than 500,000 people across multiple sites, including Darent Valley Hospital.

Amanjit has led Whipps Cross since July 2023, having joined in 2022 as deputy chief executive. During this time, he has overseen the transformation of key services, including A&E, maternity and the Eye Treatment Centre, while also delivering the first phase of the hospital’s wider redevelopment programme, with a new multi-storey car park.

Alongside these improvements, Whipps Cross has strengthened its role in innovation and research - establishing a robotic surgery programme and launching the Academic Centre for Healthy Ageing (ACHA) in partnership with Queen Mary University of London and Barts Charity, focused on improving care for older people in north east London through research, education and collaboration.

Amanjit said: "It has been a real honour to lead my local hospital, which means so much to me personally. When I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, it was the team at Whipps Cross who discovered it. I am incredibly grateful for the care I have received here, and for the fact that Whipps Cross saved my life.

"When I became chief executive, I said that I was unashamedly ambitious for Whipps Cross. From establishing the ACHA, with three world-class professors based here for the first time in the hospital’s history, to securing not just one but two surgical robots, I am proud that we have lived up to that ambition.

"Despite the changes we have delivered together, there is still more to do. While I may no longer be the chief executive, I will remain both a patient and a passionate advocate for Whipps, and I hope that in that role I will continue to work with you all."

Barts Health Group chief executive Shane DeGaris said: "Amanjit has made a significant contribution to Whipps Cross and Barts Health more widely, and I want to thank him for his leadership and commitment over the past few years.

"We are proud that our hospital chief executive roles continue to develop outstanding leaders who go on to take up major trust chief executive positions across the NHS. This reflects the strength of our group model in providing the breadth of experience needed to lead at scale.

"I wish Amanjit every success in his new role and thank him again for everything he has done for our patients, colleagues and communities."

Amanjit will take up his new post later this year. Arrangements for his successor will be announced in due course.
