Annual Fun Run takes on new shape in the face of COVID-19
Following the death of Sarah Hammond who passed away aged 24 in 1997, Sarah’s family and friends have raised money for Barts Health every year through a fun run.
This year, due to COVID-19, the fun run couldn’t take place for the first time in over 20 years, but this didn’t deter Sarah’s loved ones from continuing to raise money in her memory.
Instead of gathering Sarah’s friends and family together at Newham Leisure Centre as is the tradition, they were encouraged to take part in 30 mins of exercise from their own homes.
Participants rose to the challenge and used their imagination to come up with lots of new ways to support the cause. Activities included garden runs, hit workouts, standing on their head, taekwondo, skipping, penalty shoot-outs, badminton, boules, cycling, trampolining, circuits and dancing.
This year the challenge went global, with Sarah’s friends and family joining in from the USA, France, Spain, Dubai, Greece, Canada and even Australia. Together they’ve raised nearly £4,000!
We’d like to say a big thank you to the family - combined with their fundraising over the last two decades, this brings their total to an incredible £100,000.
