Barts Health takes leading role in Tessa Jowell Academy

Tessa Jowell centre of excellence

The neuro-oncology team at Barts Health will take a leading role in the Tessa Jowell Academy, a new free learning platform connecting the 28 NHS brain tumour centres.

After being recognised as a centre of excellence by the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission, Barts Health will continue to collaborate with the organisation through the Tessa Jowell Academy, which formally launches on the 24 February 2022.

Making neuro-oncology resources more accessible

The academy recognises there is a lack of educational resources for neuro-oncology and brain tumour care. With Covid-19 presenting an obstacle to many face-to-face sessions, the academy will provide virtual sessions that can either be attended live or in your own time.

The aim of the Tessa Jowell Academy is to be a national learning and networking platform for brain tumour specialists to share cutting edge knowledge between centres, and to support the improvement of services. It is hoped that with the support of the academy, more centres will qualify for excellence status in the future, extending reassurance of excellent NHS care.

What’s on offer

The Tessa Jowell Academy will provide highly-specialised lecturers for courses, resources, and peer-to-peer connections in an effort to improve the quality of brain tumour care across the UK. The courses includes:

  • Back-to-basics course – A 10-part educational course covering the basics of all specialty fields related to brain tumours, from surgery to rehab.

  • Hospital of the future series – A 10-part series of webinars and discussions on the latest innovations and excellence as identified through the Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence designation initiative.

  • Allied specialties spotlight series – A 10-part Interactive workshop focusing on different elements of services provided by allied specialties for brain tumour patients.

All to improve brain tumour care

The resources are targeted for nurses and allied healthcare professionals working in neuro-oncology.  By providing better, more accessible, resources it is hoped the academy will help improve the overall quality of care for people with brain tumours, while also giving colleagues the opportunity to develop their skills and careers.

On completion of the course, which is CPD accredited, colleagues will receive a certificate which they can use for their revalidation or appraisals.

In addition to this, Barts Health will also play a leading role in establishing a Neuro-Oncology Clinical Research Network that will connect all brain tumour care centres across the UK. The network will provide information about new clinical trials, promote research collaboration, and share best practice.
