Maternity strikes gold with midwifery awards

The chief midwife for NHS England poses with staff

The success of our maternity departments was celebrated with staff members recognised for their hard work towards making improvements to our services.

Held at The Royal London Hospital, the informal event included maternity leads at The Royal London, Whipps Cross and Newham sharing progress that had been made at their sites.

The event was attended by the chief midwifery officer at NHS England, Kate Brintworth, who handed out three awards.

The first was to Lina Pinheiro, who was given the Chief Midwifery Officer Support Worker Excellence Award.

“She embodies every NHS value, always pushing for the highest standards of care while keeping things running smoothly—all with a smile,” her nomination said.

“She’s made a huge difference, not just for the women she cares for but also for her colleagues. Her standards are so high that she naturally lifts everyone around her.

“Giving Lina this award would be a well-earned tribute to her dedication, kindness, and the lasting impact she’s made.

A Chief Midwifery Officer Silver Award was awarded to Kade Mondeh, a consultant midwife and associate director of midwifery at Barts Health. Kade qualified as a nurse in 1995 and a Midwife in 1997. She has worked at Barts Health since 2011.

“She is wholly dedicated to driving high quality midwifery care,” her nomination said.

“She is highly regarded and respected by all who work with her, and she is always open to collaborating and working with teams outside of the maternity areas to improve practice.

“She provides support and guidance to anyone who approaches her in a non-judgemental open way that encourages transparency and is always open to lifelong learning herself.”

There was a final award handed to Shereen Nimmo, group director of midwifery for Barts Health. Shereen was awarded a Chief Midwifery Officer Gold Award for her work in helping transform maternity services across the trust.

“Shereen demonstrates exceptional system leadership, consistently going above and beyond to improve care for women and support staff,” her nomination said.

Shereen added: “It’s been wonderful to celebrate the success of our maternity departments and to recognise the incredible efforts of our staff. Every improvement we’ve made is a direct result of their dedication and teamwork, and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together.”
