Over 55,000 Covid-19 vaccines delivered by Barts Health hospital hubs

Last week saw the Barts Health hospital vaccination hubs, located at four of the Trust’s hospitals – Newham, Whipps Cross, Royal London and St. Bartholomew’s – complete their work delivering Covid-19 vaccines.

Since the first hub opened in December 2020, they have collectively delivered 55,633 doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine – 28,995 first doses and 26,638 second doses. Initially opened to provide a vaccine to Barts Health staff, the hubs quickly began vaccinating health and social care workers from across north east London and members of the public eligible to receive a vaccine.

“North east London was particularly badly hit by Covid-19 in both waves”, says Andrew Hines Lead Group Director for Vaccination at Barts Health. “This meant it was vital to get as many people vaccinated and protected as soon as possible. Barts Health hospital vaccination hubs played a key role in doing this, something we are very proud of.

“I’m particularly impressed by the speed at which these hubs were set up, especially when you consider it was done during the Christmas period and at the height of the second wave of Covid-19”, continues Andrew.

Hundreds of staff from across Barts Health were involved in the running of these hospital vaccination hubs. From administrative staff who supported bookings and the pharmacists who managed vaccine supply, to the domestic and porter staff who set up the hubs and the vaccinators who delivered the vaccine, it’s been a real team effort.

“We can all be incredibly proud of the work done by everyone involved in running these Covid-19 vaccine hubs,” says Andrew. “The collaboration between individuals in and across the hubs, and with our partner organisations, has been fantastic. It’s the reason we have delivered such a large number of vaccines in a relatively short period of time.

“I’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in supporting these hubs over the last five months. In particular, I’d like to thank Louise Hicks, Karen Green and Valerie Swaby who led their set-up and delivery, the operational leads in each of the hospitals, and the engagement and communications groups who have worked so hard to promote uptake across our diverse workforce and community. The collective effort of all involved has played a huge part in helping us all get back to doing the things we love.”

Representatives from across our hospital vaccination hubs share a message of thanks to everyone who helped get the hubs up and running and to every member of staff who came forward to get vaccinated.

If you have not had your first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, there are plenty of ways you still  can. And if you have had your first dose, don’t forget to get your second .
