Quality progress impresses our international guests

IHI delegates at Barts Health

Our quality improvement project teams were in the spotlight on Wednesday as we welcomed around 100 members of an international forum on quality and safety in healthcare to Barts Health.

Delegates, who had travelled from across the globe to visit four of our hospitals, heard directly from our teams about some of the quality improvement (QI) projects taking place at our trust to enhance patient services and the experience of our staff, and our focus on quality care for widely.

Examples included projects to boost medicines safety, improve care of the elderly and reduce how long patients stay in hospital after surgery. There was also presentations on patient participation in QI.

The event, organised in partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the British Medical Journal (BMJ), was an opportunity to celebrate our progress since we launched our WeImprove programme in 2019 and to learn about how European colleagues are using QI to boost outcomes in their home countries and the challenges along the way.

The visit took place ahead of a major international conference at London’s Excel arena where various Barts Health projects will be presented.

Since 2019 hundreds of staff members have received training on how to use QI methodology which gives a structured approach to making lasting change. As a result it’s becoming more embedded in our working lives and helping us to tackle problems, both big and small.

WeImprove programme director Jen Leonard said: "An incredible day hosting BMJ IHI international forum delegates, sharing the brilliant improvement work across Barts Health. Fantastic too to hear the reflections of international colleagues on how proud we should be with our achievements and opportunities for further learning."

Marianne White, who visited Newham Hospital as part of the event, praised our teams for "creating a positive culture focusing on lifelong health and working with our communities".
