Saving energy through solar panel boost

Solar panels on top of large building

Barts Health NHS Trust has been awarded funding to install 393 new solar panels at Mile End Hospital, in a groundbreaking new project to slash NHS energy costs delivering annual Trust savings of around £35k.

Last week the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced a package of £100 million from Great British Energy for the NHS to install solar power across 78 NHS Trusts which are expected to deliver savings of around £8.6 million a year.

Fiona Peskett, director of strategy and integration and chair of The Royal London and Mile End Hospital’s green group said: “By investing in renewable energy, the cost savings accumulated can be redirected to frontline care to ensure that our staff can provide the best care to our patients and communities.

“Using solar energy also ensures a steady power supply, making our services more reliable and protected from power disruptions.”

This project has been planned to avoid disruption to our patients, staff and services and will be completed by March 2026.
