More than 1,000 young people across East London will get the chance to explore NHS careers through the next phase of Healthcare Horizons, thanks to support from Bank of America. 

Delivered by Barts Health NHS Trust and supported by Barts Charity, Healthcare Horizons is a programme that helps young people build the skills, confidence and real-world experience to kick-start a career in healthcare.  

It's also a key part of our commitment to enabling staff to Bloom at Barts - creating the kind of environment where people can grow, thrive and feel supported from day one.  

Building on the success of the programme's first two phases, the third phase aims to: 

• Engage over 1,000 people from across East London 
• Deliver over 150 work experience placements 
• Support at least 100 young people through pre-employment training  
• Partner with 37 local schools and colleges  
• Increase participation from young people from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds  

Since launching in 2019, Healthcare Horizons has already made a huge impact - engaging more than 4,600 young people through career events and mentoring, helping over 600 progress into health-related degrees and supporting 330 people secure NHS jobs. It's real proof of what can be achieved when people feel supported, encouraged and backed by teams that believe in their potential. 

But don't just take our word for it. Rahat, a Tower Hamlets resident, is one of the many young people who found their path through Healthcare Horizons.

Following a placement at The Royal London Hospital, Rahat secured a job as a trainee assistant technician officer in a pharmacy - a job he once thought was out of reach.  

“Before Healthcare Horizons, finding a job genuinely seemed impossible. I was looking for a job for about three years, and it made me feel helpless and frustrated because I couldn’t do anything.  

“Healthcare Horizons helped me understand the importance of the patient and how their needs must always come first. It taught me empathy and how to be there if a patient needs it. The team also set me up with a placement at The Royal London Hospital, which helped me get the job I have now and I am very grateful for it.” 

Healthcare Horizons brings together NHS teams, charities, schools, colleges and local businesses to create clearer pathways into sustainable employment. It helps young people build their future and brings talented people into the NHS who truly reflect the communities we serve.
