Inspiring the next generation of surgeons

A surgeon involved in saving the hand of a police officer was shortlisted for a national award which recognises those who have gone above and beyond in supporting the next generation of surgeons.

Gurjinderpal Singh Pahal, the lead clinician for the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at The Royal London Hospital, was part of a team who operated on Yasmin within 30 minutes of her arriving at the hospital in April 2024.

In light of his actions, was shortlisted for a 2026 Silver Scalpel Award - a prestigious honour in surgical training in the UK. The nominees are chosen by trainees themselves, following a rigorous national selection process that evaluates leadership, professionalism, accessibility, development of trainees, and the creation of a positive and inclusive training environment.

Guj was also recently commended by the Metropolitan Police for his actions when the police officer was injured during an incident in Hainault when a man armed with a sword injured several people. The commendation recognised his 'distinguished devotion, care and compassion in delivering medical assistance'.

Within 30 minutes of arriving at The Royal London Hospital via air ambulance, she was already in surgery to save her hand.
Guj said that the speed at which he was able to mobilise trauma theatre and assemble anaesthetic, nursing and surgical teams meant that the surgery to save her hand was carried out successfully.
