Barts Health projects up for national prize

Enhanced recovery team at Whipps Cross Hospital

Two Barts Health projects are finalists in the 2026 HSJ Partnership Awards, highlighting the impact of collaboration on patient care.

At Barts Heart Centre, the ATLAS Virtual Ward, developed with Ortus-iHealth, is giving people waiting for treatment after a heart attack a more comfortable option.

Low-risk patients whose condition is stable can go home and use an app to record their vital signs. Staff monitor the data remotely and can respond quickly if a patient’s condition changes.

The system reduces waiting times, frees up hospital beds, and helps patients stay active and well at home, rather than spending days in hospital awaiting care.

The team are up for the Best Partnership Delivering Virtual Care prize.

At Whipps Cross Hospital, the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme, supported by Johnson & Johnson MedTech, is helping patients recover faster after hip fractures.

The programme covers the full journey: preparing patients before surgery, using best-practice techniques during the operation, and getting them moving soon after.

By coordinating the whole care team, ERAS reduces complications, shortens hospital stays, and improves recovery for patients with complex needs.

The project, a finalist in the Most Effective Contribution to Clinical Redesign category, was celebrated earlier this year for the difference it has made to patient care and savings for the NHS.

Both projects show how NHS teams working with external expertise can improve care while easing pressure on hospitals.

The HSJ Partnership Awards ceremony will take place in London on Thursday 19 March.

Winners automatically move forward to the main HSJ Awards, giving them a second chance to win and even greater recognition.
