The support given to students on placement at Barts Health has been recognised at City University of London’s practice excellence awards.

The awards, which were originally due to be held in 2020 but were disrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, celebrate the support provided to healthcare students while on placement in east London as part of their studies.

Nominations, including those made by students themselves, are judged by an expert panel, with winners usually presented with a prize at the university’s School of Health Sciences annual awards ceremony.

St Bartholomew’s Hospital’s therapeutic radiography team were awarded outstanding placement of the year.

Adil Patel from the radiography team was named clinical supervisor of the year, whilst Laura Lauren who has previously worked within respiratory medicine at St Bartholomew’s, scooped practice supervisor of the year.

Lisa Gilligan from the intensive care unit at St Bartholomew's was named City’s Nurse of the Year in a special award to coincide with the World Health Organisation's year of the nurse in 2020.

Professor Debra Salmon, Dean from City University of London’s School of Health Sciences said: "These awards are an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the important contribution our placement partners make to students’ learning.

Laura Lauren"Our students benefit enormously from the excellent expertise, support and supervision at Barts Health, so we are delighted to be able to recognise the contribution of the Trust with these awards.  We look forward to continuing our partnership with Barts Health to provide world-leading practice education."

Lisa Gilligan said: “Working in ITU is always a massive team effort and that applies to supporting our student nurses too. The atmosphere that this creates is a big part of why people choose to stay long term. I’m really proud to win the award and it was lovely reading through the feedback from the people who nominated me.”

Accepting her award, Laura Lauren (pictured right) said: "Supporting students is an incredibly enjoyable experience. I have always tried to be a role model and to be honest with them that nursing is very hard but also a very rewarding in equal measure. It’s great to know I’ve made a difference."
