New series to bring Barts to the nation

The square at St Bartholomew's Hospital

We’re proud to share that St Bartholomew’s Hospital will be at the heart of a new six-part documentary series commissioned by Channel 5.

Barts: Our Hospital Through Time with Alice Roberts, produced by Lion Television and GroupM Motion Entertainment, will take viewers on a unique journey through the 900-year history of our remarkable hospital.

Presented by Professor Alice Roberts – a medical doctor turned broadcaster – the series will explore how centuries of innovation and care have shaped Barts into the hospital it is today.

Filming is due to get underway this summer and will feature our talented staff, patients, archives and historic buildings. The series will celebrate both our pioneering present and our extraordinary past – from medieval medicine to cutting-edge surgery.

Professor Charles Knight, Chief Executive of St Bartholomew’s, said: “This series is a wonderful opportunity for more people to discover the real Barts – where nine hundred years of history meets state-of-the-art, world-class, lifesaving care. We’re excited for viewers to see the extraordinary work of our teams and to share the story of a hospital that’s been at the heart of healthcare in the UK for centuries.”

Professor Alice Roberts added: “I’m very excited indeed to be embarking on this new series with Barts. In this series, I’ll be delving into how medicine and health have changed over the centuries – and peering into the future of medical advances just around the corner.”

We’ll share more details, including the broadcast date, in due course.
