Winning nuclear medicine team

A short patient information video created by staff at St Bartholomew’s Hospital has won a national award for innovation in healthcare.

The video, produced by the Nuclear Medicine and PET‑CT team, was named Innovative Team of the Year 2026 at the British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS) 60th Anniversary Spring Meeting, held in Manchester earlier this month.

The team was one of three finalists from across the UK, with the winner chosen through a national vote.

The award‑winning film explains what happens during a Rubidium (Rb82) PET‑CT heart scan, a test used to check how well blood is flowing to the heart. Staff recognised that many patients feel nervous beforehand because they are unsure what to expect and created the video to help reassure them.

The film takes patients step by step through the experience, from arriving at the department to completing the scan, helping to make the process feel more familiar and less daunting. It was filmed and edited entirely by staff using an iPhone, with team members volunteering their time outside normal working hours.

Patients and colleagues have praised the video for being calm, clear and welcoming.

Barbara Ribeiro, clinical service manager for Nuclear Medicine and PET‑CT, said: "I am incredibly proud of the team and this well‑deserved recognition for their hard work.

"The term ‘nuclear medicine’ can sound quite scary to patients, and we wanted to show that the scan is very safe and that people are well looked after when they visit us.

Helping patients feel at ease and prepared is really important to us."

The team hopes to build on the success of the video by adding translations and continuing to improve the resource based on patient feedback.
