Resident doctor project scoops national prize
Two doctors from Barts Health have won a national award after leading a project to improve the experience of resident doctors (formerly known as junior doctors).
Dr Manasi Jyothish and Dr Rob Monfries, chief registrars at St Bartholomew's Hospital, were named winners of the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP) Chief Registrar Project of the Year award at the Excellence in Patient Care Awards in Liverpool on 9 July.
Their project, Striving for Excellence: Transforming the Resident Doctor Experience, was delivered through the Resident Doctor Improvement Group (RDIG) and focused on creating a more supportive, inclusive and positive working environment for the hospital's resident doctor workforce.
A major focus of the initiative was improving support for locally employed doctors (LEDs). The team introduced three new LED mentors, organised career development events and encouraged doctors to take part in clinical working groups and quality improvement projects. They also supported a Women in Leadership event, helping to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across the workforce.
The award recognises the best chief registrar-led project in the country and highlights the impact of the team's work to improve the experience of resident doctors at St Bartholomew's.
Dr Jyothish said: "Winning this award has been a true honour and is a testament to our collaborative efforts with the management team. We have always believed that excellent patient care goes hand in hand with a supported and fulfilled workforce."
The team hopes the project will leave a lasting legacy through a sustainable framework that enables resident doctors to raise concerns, access support and help shape improvements across the trust.
Cardiology registrar Dr Jyothish and oncology registrar Dr Monfries thanked colleagues and mentors Dr Andrew Wragg, Dr Rachel Lewis and Dr Emma Cheasty for their support throughout the project.
