St Bartholomew’s inspires the next generation of NHS stars

School children in the North Wing at Barts

Earlier this month, over 150 students from across north east London and beyond visited St Bartholomew’s Hospital to explore exciting career opportunities in healthcare.

The students from our local area gathered in the newly restored Great Hall at Barts, where they attended a series of talks from staff at the hospital. Doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals shared their personal stories and gave valuable insights into life working in the NHS.

The event was a collaboration between St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Barts North Wing, and the Healthcare Horizons Programme, and was funded by Barts Charity.

In addition, Year 12 students from further afield also had the chance to tour the hospital this month and take part in simulated medical scenarios, using lifelike mannequins to practice real-world healthcare skills. These hands-on workshops provided a taste of what it’s like to work in a hospital setting.

This visit was part of the Haberdashers’ Futures Programme, which helps students from local schools build confidence and discover new career options.

Feedback from students who took the tour was overwhelmingly positive, with many saying the experience helped them think about their future careers in new ways. One student shared, "The experience was eye-opening and has definitely influenced my career aspirations."

St Bartholomew's Hospital chief registrar Manasi Jyothish, who helped to organise Haberdashers’ visit, said: "Seeing the bright and inquisitive minds engaging with the many tasks, from scanning hearts to planning radiotherapy for cancer patients, was a real privilege.

"Knowing that we could inspire many of the students to pursue healthcare careers made it all the more rewarding.

"It was one of the most fulfilling days I've had in my tenure as chief registrar so far."

These events are great examples of the ongoing partnership between St Bartholomew’s and schools across the UK, particularly in supporting young people from our local communities.

They also highlight the importance of giving students the opportunity to meet professionals, learn about different careers, and gain hands-on experience in healthcare.
