Barts cluster boosts UK life sciences

Our plans to create a life sciences campus in Whitechapel have boosted the UK’s world leading status in the sector, according to the government.

We received multiple ministerial endorsements this week as Whitehall departments came together to showcase the best and boldest ideas in UK life sciences.

We had already obtained the backing of the science minister, Lord Vallance, when we announced our ground-breaking partnership with private sector developers and investors.

But the potential of the Barts Life Sciences Cluster to draw in £800 million commercial investment gave us top billing in an official announcement for London Life Sciences Week.

Three departments (science, innovation and technology; health and social care; and business and trade) joined forces with the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency and the Government Office for Science to hail support for cutting-edge scientists and innovators.

Under the heading “UK’s world leading status as life sciences hub boosted by £800 million Barts Life Sciences Cluster plans,” Dr Zubir Ahmed, the health and innovation minister, said: “I am confident that if we combine the ingenuity of our leading scientists with the might of our NHS, we can deliver a health service which is once again there for its patients and the envy of the world.”
