Barts Health staff recognised for going over and above

Two members of Barts Health staff were nominated for The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards

Dr Bijay Sinha, Consultant Physician at Whipps Cross Hospital, and Carlton DaCosta, a Senior Charge Nurse at Newham Hospital, have been recognised for going above and beyond when caring for their patients.

Bijay runs the elderly care ward at Whipps Cross Hospital and has set up a breakfast club, exercise group and music therapy for patients. Sanjay Chandarana nominated Bijay for the Best Doctor category, for the outstanding care he gave to his father, Jayantilal, during his final days.

Bijay said: “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Sanjay for nominating me for this award, it’s such a surprise and an honour. I’m passionate about providing the best possible care that I can to my patients. Sanjay’s father was one of the nicest men you could ever hope to meet. He had complex health issues but I’d see him often to make sure he was comfortable. It means so much to be recognised by his family and knowing that we’ve had a lasting impact.”

Carlton works on the intensive care ward at Newham Hospital. He was nominated for the Best Nurse award by Wendy Lemard, for going out of his way to support her when she came out of a diabetic coma, and being there for her and her family during a difficult time while she was in hospital.

Upon finding out about his nomination, Carlton said: “It made me a bit tearful, actually. I find my job very rewarding and I love caring for patients.”

The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards celebrate staff who work hard to care for patients and make the NHS what it is. The annual awards, now in their third year, were set up to allow readers to pay tribute to the selfless medics, researchers and volunteers who have touched or even saved their lives.
