Brothers build careers side by side at Newham Hospital

Sadain and Hasnain

For brothers Sadain and Hasnain, Newham Hospital has become a second home.

Sadain and Hasnain corridorToday, they work as housekeepers on wards opposite each other, but both started their careers through Project SEARCH after being encouraged by their parents to give the programme a try.

The supported internship programme helps young people gain workplace experience, develop independence and move into paid employment. For the brothers, it was the start of two careers that have continued to bloom with us.

"It helped me build my confidence and become more independent," said Hasnain, who has worked at Newham Hospital for 10 years. "If you work hard, it can help you get a job and learn new skills."

Sadain joined Project SEARCH just two years later. During his placements he worked in stores, pharmacy and theatres, and enjoyed theatres so much that he now works there full time, having found a career where he belongs.

"Project SEARCH taught me how different the workplace is from school or college," he said. "It helped me build my confidence, meet new people and learn new skills."

One piece of advice from a mentor has stayed with him throughout his career.

"If you don't ask for help, nobody will know you need it. Don't be afraid to ask questions and never give up."

Both brothers now regularly meet other interns visiting their departments and share their own experiences of the programme.

"Once, we were in their position," said Sadain. "Project SEARCH helps you develop the skills and confidence you need to succeed."

Although they work on different wards, the brothers know they're never far away if one of them needs support.

"Not everybody gets to work with their sibling," said Hasnain. "If one of us needs help, we're always there for each other."

The brothers credit their family, especially their father, for encouraging them to take that first step. Years later, they're still proving the difference Project SEARCH can make, not only by building successful careers, but by helping the next group of interns thrive.
