Changes to our board as hospital chief executive announced

Our board welcomes Gurjit Mahil as chief executive of Whipps Cross Hospital and Dr Rima Nicole Vaid as a group non-executive director.

We are pleased to announce that Ms Gurjit Mahil has been appointed as the next chief executive of Whipps Cross Hospital. She is set to take on her new role from 2 November 2026, immediately succeeding Dr Amanjit Jhund following his move to become chief executive officer at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.

Gurjit first joined Whipps Cross Hospital in August 2023 initially leading elective recovery before her appointment as deputy chief executive and chief operating officer. She brings a wealth of experience from senior operational and executive leadership roles across London organisations, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust and King's College London University Hospital.

Gurjit said:

"Whipps Cross is a hospital that means a great deal to me, both personally and professionally, and it's a privilege to lead an organisation with such a strong sense of purpose and deep roots in its community.

"Taking up this role feels particularly significant as this November also marks 20 years in my career of healthcare operational management. Reflecting on a journey that began as a volunteer and has led me to becoming a hospital chief executive, I remain inspired by the people at the heart of our Trust.

"Together, we have a unique opportunity to improve outcomes, tackle health inequalities and ensure we continue to provide outstanding care for the people we serve. I am proud to lead that journey alongside our staff, partners and local communities."

Shane DeGaris, group chief executive, said:

"Gurjit brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our senior leadership team. It is always gratifying to be able to promote one of our own people after an open competition, and I look forward to working alongside her in this new role.

"I would also like to thank Amanjit for his contribution to Whipps Cross over the last few years, and for ensuring a smooth handover. We wish him all the best in his new role."

Meanwhile, we are also pleased to welcome Dr Rima Nicole Vaid as a non-executive director to our trust board.

Rima is an experienced GP and clinical leader who trained at both St Bartholomew's and The Royal London Hospital and has worked in primary care in Newham for more than 13 years. She is currently clinical director for neighbourhood delivery in Newham working across system partners to improve integrated care, strengthen neighbourhood working and reduce health inequalities.

As a non-executive director, Rima brings a wealth of primary care experience along with a deep understanding of our local communities that helps us support the people we serve.
