Families praise maternity staff across Barts Health
Families giving birth at Newham Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital and The Royal London Hospital have praised the compassion, kindness and professionalism of maternity staff across all three hospitals.
In a 2025 survey of over 200 patients, parents consistently highlighted the warmth and support of midwives and doctors, saying they felt listened to, treated with dignity and spoken to clearly at every stage of their care. Experiences during labour and birth were especially positive across the Trust, with strong feedback on how well staff worked together, how partners were involved, and the kindness shown throughout what can be an anxious and emotional time.
Families at Newham reported particularly positive experiences including feeling supported by staff, treated with kindness and involved in decisions.
At Whipps Cross, parents highlighted the compassion of midwives and said they felt listened to during antenatal appointments and labour.
Families at The Royal London praised the professionalism of staff and many reported confidence and trust in the teams caring for them.
Across the Trust, the feedback shows clear strengths in staff compassion, communication and respect, but also highlights where experiences fall short in some areas.
In response, each hospital is now co-designing detailed improvement plans with its local Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP) Chairs, ensuring actions are shaped directly by the people who use our services.
These plans will set out targeted improvements across antenatal care, labour and birth, triage, postnatal support and early-weeks care at home. They will be shared through local MNVP networks, the ICB and Trust governance forums in the new year.
Shereen Nimmo, Group Chief Midwife at Barts Health NHS trust, said:
“We are incredibly proud that so many families continue to speak so warmly about our maternity teams. At the same time, we take seriously the areas where women and birthing people have told us we must do better. We remain committed to delivering safe, personalised and consistently high-quality maternity care for every family.”
