Improving our maternity spaces
From 9th June 2025, work began to improve and update our maternity areas to make them more comfortable and modern for you and your baby. From October 2025, phase two of refurbishment which involves improving the other half of Mulberry Ward and the out corridor will begin.
Our new postnatal and antenatal wards will have a mixture of single rooms with ensuite bathrooms and three bedded bays to provide all mothers and babies more privacy and comfort.
While this work is taking place, we’ll continue to offer safe, high-quality care – but there may be some changes you should be aware of:
- Outpatient antenatal, labour and triage services stay the same.
- Transfers from Labour to Postnatal Ward may take longer due to reduced space.
- As there will be fewer beds at times, we may offer you care at one of our Barts Health hospitals if your pregnancy is low risk.
Postnatal care:
- From mid October – November 2025: Postnatal care will move to Victory Ward in Junction 9 of the lower ground floor of the main hospital building.
- From Mid-Nov 2025: Services return to the Lilac Birth Centre.
Midwifery-Led birth services
- Temporarily relocated to ground floor, Labour Ward (same facilities including waterbirth).
- If there is any disruption, our sister hospitals will support your choice.
Induction of labour
- Some care (including induction of labour will be shared with sister hospitals in North East London from October 2025 for approximately three months.
We expect all work to be completed by 31st January 2026, with the aim of minimal disruption to your care here at Whipps Cross Hospital.
We know and understand how important this time is for you and your family. Our team will continue to do their best to make sure your care remains as smooth and positive as possible.
Thank you for your understanding while we make our maternity services even better for you.
