New water station in Whipps Cross ED

In the reception at Whipps Cross Hospital A&E, a simple but powerful change is improving both patient experience and environmental impact.

With a high volume of patients, visitors, and staff passing through each day, demand for drinking water was constant.

The small unit previously in place struggled to meet this need, frequently breaking down and proving unsuitable for such a busy location.

At the same time, many people were relying on single-use plastic bottles purchased nearby.

The introduction of new contactless water bottle refill stations has transformed this experience. Designed specifically for high footfall areas, the units can deliver up to 80 litres of chilled, filtered water per hour.

Built from 100% recycled materials and equipped with UV sterilisation, they offer a safe, efficient, and sustainable alternative to standard water fountains.

Early impact is already visible. Since installation, over 350 plastic bottles have been saved from landfill. To put that into perspective, every 150 bottles saved equates to one person’s average yearly plastic bottle disposal.

Built-in digital counters allow users to see these savings in real time, with more detailed data on plastic, CO₂, and oil savings to follow.

Feedback from staff and patients has been overwhelmingly positive. Many appreciate the easy access to free, chilled water, and colleagues have noted it encourages them to refill rather than buy bottled drinks.

The stations not only improve convenience but also clearly demonstrate our Trust’s commitment to sustainability.

Plans are now underway to expand the initiative, with the Outpatient Department corridor identified as the next location.

By focusing on high-use areas and consolidating smaller units, we’re taking practical steps to reduce waste while enhancing everyday experiences for patients, staff, and visitors alike.
