Infected Blood Psychology Service

Support for people affected by infected blood

Specialist psychological and social care shaped around your needs

The Infected Blood Psychology Service (IBPS) offers support to anyone infected or affected by contaminated blood or blood products. Based at The Royal London Hospital, our team is part of a national NHS service set up in response to the Infected Blood Inquiry.

We understand how deeply lives have been impacted, and our aim is to offer care that’s compassionate, practical and shaped by your experience. Support is available in person, by phone or by video call.

Our small, specialist team includes a social worker — your first point of contact — and a clinical psychologist. Together they’ll help with emotional wellbeing, therapy, and practical matters like housing, benefits, or accessing wider health services.

You can refer yourself directly to the service. Once we receive your referral, we’ll contact you to arrange an appointment. Please note, your appointment may appear under “Clinical Haematology.”

If you need urgent support, please call 999 or 111, visit your nearest A&E, call Samaritans on 116 123 or text SHOUT to 85258.

Referring patients with easy bruising or bleeding

Guidance for GPs and primary care teams

If your patient presents with unexplained bruising or frequent bleeding in more than one area, please refer them to us for further investigation.

When to refer

Please refer if your patient has one or more of the following:

  • Recurrent or excessive bruising, especially from a young age
  • Prolonged bleeding after minor injuries
  • Excessive bleeding following surgery or dental work
  • Unexplained bleeding without a clear cause
  • Family history of a bleeding disorder

Recommended tests in primary care

Before referral, please carry out the following:

  • Full blood count (FBC)
  • Clotting screen: PT and APTT
  • Fibrinogen levels
  • Liver function tests
  • Iron studies

We also recommend using the ISTH Bleeding Assessment Tool.

If the assessment suggests concern, or test results are abnormal, please contact us via the NHS Advice and Guidance portal.

Prescribing Tranexamic acid

We recommend that patients with bleeding disorders have Tranexamic acid 1g TDS available on repeat prescription for use when bleeding occurs. However it should not be taken if the patient has visible blood in their urine (haematuria).
