Groundbreaking surgery in the Eye Treatment Centre

This year has brought considerable challenges for staff – but many good news stories have emerged.

Fred Mechell had lost his natural lens and was unable to focus in one of his eyes, due to an injury suffered in October 2018.

In March 2020, Cordelia McKechnie and Panagiotis Georgoudis at the Whipps Cross Eye Treatment Centre performed groundbreaking surgery to implant a Carlevale lens in Fred's eye.

The Carlevale lens is an innovative intraocular lens for patients who have lost their natural lens in their eye due to trauma or disease.

The design of the lens ensures a good post-opeartive positioning.

It doesn't need large flaps or sutures and it is easy to fixate on a tiny area with an inbuilt anchorage system.

This operation has only been performed in a handful of UK sites.

Fred was very happy. He has been able to focus with both eyes now and he grateful to Cordelia, Panagiotis and all the staff involved in his care.
