Whipps Cross Hospital’s new multistorey car park unveiled
We’re delighted that the first stage of Whipps Cross Hospital’s redevelopment has been completed with the opening of a brand-new multistorey car park.
Delivered on time and within budget as part of the national New Hospital Programme, the facility provides:
- 500 spaces in total with 434 staff spaces across floors one to five, and 66 visitor spaces on the ground floor
- 50 accessible bays with 40 for staff and 10 for visitors
- 100 electric vehicle charging points in total with 74 for staff and 16 for visitors, supporting the Trust’s commitment to sustainable travel.
The new car park was officially opened yesterday, 30 October, by the MP for Chingford and Woodford Green, Rt Hon Sir Iain Duncan Smith, and will be available to staff and visitors from 6am on Monday 3 November.
Constructed by Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine, allows the Trust to close its temporary staff car park, which will become the site of the new hospital. All other existing staff and visitor car parks remain unaffected.
Amanjit Jhund, chief executive of Whipps Cross Hospital said: “It is great to see the new multi-storey car park for Whipps Cross completed on time and within budget. I am grateful to everyone who has made this a reality.
“We were all disappointed when, earlier in the year, we were told that the construction of the new Whipps Cross Hospital was being put back a few years. But this fantastic new car park still represents completion of the first phase of the hospital redevelopment and, now that we can close the temporary car park, we have a site that is ready for construction of long-awaited new healthcare facilities, which our staff and the local people we serve so need.”

Minister Karin Smyth, Minister of State for Health, said: “This is a really important step in the delivery of the scheme which will provide much-needed improvements to healthcare facilities in the area.”
Darren Crook, New Hospital Programme Delivery Director, said: "This is an important milestone for the hospital as part of the broader redevelopment of Whipps Cross, which will provide much needed new facilities for patients and staff.
Paul Tumelty, regional director of IHP said: “IHP are honoured to have been afforded the opportunity to contribute our skills and expertise and allowing a significant step to be taken forward in realising this vision for the people of Waltham Forest and its surrounding neighbourhoods."
Entry and exit to the new car park will be via a junction on Hospital Road, close to the chest clinic and main entrance to the hospital.
From 1 November 2025, coinciding with the opening of the new multistorey car park, Barts Health will switch its pay-as-you-go parking provider from RingGo to APCOA.
Pay-as-you-go users — including those using the new car park — will need to download the APCOA Connect app before the system goes live. Card and cash payments will still be accepted, and there are no immediate changes to parking charges.
