The Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, has received a donation of tablet devices for its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ward from the children’s charity Isla’s Journey.
Isla’s Journey was set up by Ashley Simons in 2019 after the birth of her twin daughters Isla and Esme, who were born prematurely.
After four rounds of IVF, at just 24 weeks, Ashley went into labour and Esme and Isla were born on 20 January 2018. However, Esme tragically died shortly after being born.
This generous donation will allow families to receive daily communication and visual updates of their baby’s progress whilst in NICU and alleviate those feelings of isolation experienced when a baby is in hospital.
The charity was set up in Isla’s name to provide care packages to families with babies and children in hospital when pregnancy doesn't go to plan.
Isla’s Journey supports them with an emergency care package of essential items, like toiletries for use during an unexpected stay in hospital.
Via social media, Ashley provides updates on Isla’s progress, documents her daily adventures and milestones and hopes to give inspiration to help others.
Isla was transferred to a specialist unit at The Royal London Hospital to receive treatment and she has just celebrated her first birthday. The hospital works with the charity to help families in similar situations going forward.
Ashley Simons, Founder of Isla’s Journey said: “The staff at The Royal London are our extended family. They are all aunties and uncles to Isla. It was only fitting that they were the first recipients of our iPad appeal so that families can make the most of the amazing ‘Vcreate’ software. We ensured every bay on the unit has its own tablet so that staff don’t have to hunt for one when logging updates.”
Fiona Lodge, Associate Director of Nursing for Children and Young People, The Royal London Children’s Hospital said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive these devices as we recognise how important it is for the both the parents and extended family to be able to see the progress their baby is making and to feel a part of their journey to recovery and eventually home”.
