We are thrilled to announce that Barts Health has been recognised, in three categories, by the HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

These awards celebrate the hard work and dedication of teams who strive to make a significant impact on patient safety. We are proud to congratulate the following teams for their exceptional work and nominations:

Developing a Positive Safety Culture Award

  • Barts Health Trust: Building a Patient Safety Culture through Safety Team Training and Staff Involvement

Perfusion service manager and patient safety specialist Philip Gamston said: "Our team training course has developed a strong patient safety culture through the meaningful engagement and participation of specialist clinical teams, making improvements to how they do their work."

Annie Hunningher, a consultant anaesthetist and the group safety lead, said: "The course supports clinical teams with cultural change and the implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework."

Virtual or Remote Care Initiative of the Year

  • Barts Health Trust and North East London FT - Development of a virtual multi-disciplinary diabetic foot service

Maternity and Midwifery Services Initiative of the Year

  • The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust: Prediction, Prevention, and Reduction of Massive Obstetric Haemorrhage

Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at The Royal London Hospital, Philippa Corson, proudly shared:

"Thanks to the hard work of the entire maternity team at The Royal London, we have halved the rates of significant bleeding in mothers who have given birth. This achievement is particularly important to us as it was inspired by our honest reflection following an outcome for a new mother, and a sincere desire from our team to learn and improve."

This accomplishment underscores the teams' commitment to continuous learning and improvement, highlighting their dedication to providing safer, better care for mothers.

As we approach the awards ceremony in September, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the teams involved and thank you for your hard work. Your commitment to patient safety is making a real difference, and we are incredibly proud of your achievements!

We wish you the best of luck.

I am pleased that the great work of the multi-disciplinary team at Barts Trust, specifically at Royal London Hospital has been gained triple HSJ recognition for patients safety - a matter of unique interest to me as a Consultant Midwife and Midwifery ambassador.
I particularly applaud Dr Corson on her Quality Improvement leadership on 'Barts Health Trust - Prediction, prevention and reduction of massive obstetric haemorrhage' which has brought about exemplary reduction of the rate of major obstetric haemorrhage (MOH) and has led to improved pathways for preventing, managing and effectively saving the lives of women who experience MOH. Staff skills and confidence in caring for women within this category has also been greatly enhanced. I am proud to be part of this work.
