Dr Paul Pfeffer
Consultant at St Bartholomew's HospitalPaul Pfeffer is a consultant respiratory physician with specialist interest in asthma and lead for the North Central and East London Severe Asthma Service.
He undertook his medical degrees at University of Cambridge and University College London before completing his medical and specialist respiratory training in London.
He was appointed in 2016 as a clinical academic consultant physician at Barts Health NHS Trust and hon senior lecturer at Queen Mary University of London.
His clinical interest is in asthma and severe asthma, promoting multi-disciplinary team management of patients and targeted use of specialist therapies, personalised to the individual patient.
Research interests
Dr Pfeffer’s research interest is in the ability of the environment to influence immune responses in the airways.
His PhD looked at how vitamin D and air pollution can affect airway lining epithelial cells. He won the prestigious British Thoracic Society Early Career Investigator Prize 2014 and continues to undertake research on the effects of these environmental factors in asthma. More recent research has also focused on how infections affect the immune system. Please see his ORCID entry for latest research (0000-0003-0369-2885). In addition Dr Pfeffer is a local principal investigator for a portfolio of asthma clinical trials.
