“They are very courageous” – John pays tribute to newly deployed intensive care staff

Senior charge nurse John Wells thanks the nurses and support staff who have been redeployed to the coronavirus frontline in intensive care at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

The team working on the intensive care unit at St Bartholomew’s would like to pass on our thanks and appreciation to the ward nurses and support staff, including health care support workers, who have come to assist us in the past month during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The commitment, quality of care and positive ‘can do’ attitude of around 120 colleagues who have been redeployed has been phenomenal.

We are very grateful and deeply impressed by your professionalism – I, for one, would have been terrified prior to starting in intensive care and at the thought of stepping into that role – you are very courageous.

We’d also like to recognise the enormous and invaluable contribution of those working on the Covid-19 enquiry line – a telephone service set up to update families on their loved one’s condition whilst also taking the responsibility of making the calls away from busy critical care staff.

Whilst this work – calling anxious families – must be trying, it is very, very helpful for all of us working at the bedside as it gives us the space to concentrate fully on the ‘hands on’ needs of our patients.

A big thank you to each and every one of you.
