Consultant cardiologist at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Simon is a consultant cardiologist specialising in the management of heart rhythm problems. He was appointed to the consultant staff of St Bartholomew's Hospital in 2004, having previously been a consultant cardiologist at the Heart Hospital. He was the clinical director of the heart rhythm service at St Bartholomew’s from 2012 until 2015, when he became the deputy director of the Barts Heart Centre. During this time he has overseen the introduction of the UK’s first 24/7 direct admission service for patients with life-threatening heart rhythm problems and also the advent of 7-day consultant-based care for cardiac inpatients at St Bartholomew's.

Treatments and procedures

Simon is interested in heart rhythm problems in patients with heart muscle disease, cardio-oncology and the management of patients with cardiac devices undergoing radiotherapy.

His practice covers all aspects of the investigation and treatment of heart rhythm problems, including drug treatment, catheter ablation and device therapy with pacemakers and defibrillators. He developed the leadless pacemaker programme at St Bartholomew’s.

He performs the following procedures:

  • Device implantation – pacemakers (including leadless pacemakers)
  • Defibrillators
  • Cardiac resynchronisation therapy for heart failure
  • Device extraction
  • Catheter ablation of abnormal heart rhythms including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular premature beats (‘ectopics’) and ventricular tachycardia.
