Dr Alison May Berner

Consultant at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Alison is an Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at Barts Health, treating gynaecological cancers.

She is also the UK’s only oncologist to be dual-trained gender identity medicine and leads the UK Cancer and Transition Service (UCATS) at Chelsea Westminster Hospitals. This is a world-first national clinic to integrate local oncology and gender affirming care for transgender and gender diverse people in the UK.

Alison attended medical school at the University of Cambridge and University College London, graduating in 2012. She completed her foundation, core medical, and specialty training in hospitals across North East London.

She has a PhD in cancer genomics from Queen Mary University of London and continues there as an Academic Clinical Lecturer. Her research centres on reducing cancer care inequalities according to sex, gender and sexual orientation. Her portfolio of work spans molecular biology, epidemiological, qualitative, interventional and mixed method studies. She was recently awarded an NIHR Advanced Fellowship where her programme of work will investigate cancer incidence and outcomes for transgender and gender-diverse people with cancer.

Passionate about education, Alison is also co-author of the Cancer in LGBTQ Populations chapter of the ESMO-ASCO global curriculum and the European Society of Medical Oncology Essentials for Clinicians Gynaecological Tumours 2nd Edition.

Treatments and procedures

At Barts, Alison provides assessment and treatment of gynaecological cancers, including chemotherapy and supportive care in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

Research interests

Alison is Chief Investigator for two multisite UK studies to improve early diagnosis of cancer in transgender people, both involving Barts Health.

The NIH-funded Self-TI study investigates feasibility and acceptability of self-testing for human papillomavirus in transgender individuals. This was developed following the findings of Alison’s research on attitudes of transgender people to cervical screening for trans men and non-binary people.

TransPRIDE Study will determine reference ranges for prostate-specific antigen in trans and non-binary people with a prostate, and help reduce inequalities in prostate cancer diagnosis and monitoring for this population. This has been funded by Movember and Prostate Cancer UK.

Alison works closely with the SHARE Collaborative for Health Equity. She is a co-investigator on their project “Exploring the health needs and priorities of queer communities in the United Kingdom”.

Alison has extensive international collaborations. She has worked with the NIH (USA) to explore cancer risk factors in transgender individuals in the UK, and with the Amsterdam UMC to study incidence cervical and other gynaecological malignancies in trans men and non-binary people. She is a collaborating on a Canadian Cancer Society Grant “Addressing Inequities in Cancer Care for Transgender and Gender Diverse People Affected by Gynecological Cancers”

Leadership roles

In October 2023, Alison became President of British Association Gender Identity Specialists, a professional organisation representing clinicians and academics in the field of transgender health in the UK.

Alison is part of the Association of Cancer Physicians New Consultants group and has previously been on their trainee committee.

Alison is a Trustee of the OUTpatients LGBTIAQ+ cancer charity with whom she co-delivers research and education.

Alison has recently become part of both the NHS Confed Health and Care LGBTQ+ Leaders guiding group and the Barts Health LGBTQ+ Network where she is leading a project on inclusive healthcare.
