The Multidisciplinary Rapid Access Diagnostic Clinic

Why have I been referred to the Multidisciplinary Rapid Access Diagnostic Clinic (MRADC)?

Your GP has referred you to the MRADC at Barts Health for further investigation of your presenting symptoms. The MRADC provides quick access to a range of diagnostic tests for patients whose symptoms are causing concern with the aim of getting a diagnosis so that a treatment plan can be put in place for you as soon as possible.

What will happen at the clinic?

You will be seen by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and/or a Doctor who will ask you some questions about your symptoms and your medical history. You may have a variety of tests organised for a different day including blood tests, x-rays or scans which may include camera tests, breathing and heart tests. We will explain all the tests required during your consultation.

How long will I be there?

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, appointments are currently carried out by telephone unless stated otherwise. Consultations vary from between 30 to 60 minutes depending on how long the clinician needs to make an assessment.

Sometimes face to face appointments are requested by the clinician. If this is the case, please be prepared to be in clinic for 2 to 4 hours, as some tests may be carried out on the day.

Can I bring someone with me?

As most appointments are currently being carried out by telephone, with your consent you can choose to have additional persons on the call. Under normal circumstances, we would encourage you to bring a relative or friend to keep you company in the clinic. However due

to the coronavirus pandemic, you cannot bring additional people to face to face appointments at the Hospital. However, if you require the support of a carer or relative due to disability, this is permitted. Please keep up to date with the latest information on the Barts NHS Trust website for the latest information regarding guests of patients and visitors.

When will I get my appointment?

The MRADC Team will contact you by phone within 48 hours after your GP referral to arrange the clinic appointment. This appointment should be within 7 days from receipt of your referral to the Hospital.

It is very important that you attend the appointment. If you are not able to attend please call the telephone number below to make another appointment:

Contact: Medical Secretary for MRADC

Direct Line: 079 1781 4511

Hours of operation: 08:30 to 17:00, Monday to Friday

Can I be offered a video appointment instead?

Yes, the Rapid Diagnostic Team can facilitate video appointments if you would prefer this to a telephone appointment. In some cases, face to face appointments may be necessary in order for the clinician to assess you appropriately.

When will I get my results?

We will either see you again in a follow-up clinic or give you a telephone call to explain the results and discuss a plan if necessary. This is usually within 21 days following your first appointment. You and your GP will also receive a letter explaining any findings.

Please bring a list of all the medications that you are currently taking with you, and also any medical letters or reports about any care or treatment you have been receiving in other hospitals.
