Children and families help shape future care

Parents have said they feel their children have been well-cared for in our hospitals, with the majority saying they are treated with dignity and respect by our staff.

As part of the 2024 Children and Young People’s Patient Experience Survey, patients and parents were asked about their experiences following hospital stays or day case procedures. At Barts Health, 208 service users responded, with a 16.88% response rate across our sites.

Highlights included:

  • 100% of parents felt their child was well cared for in hospital.
  • 97% of parents or carers said staff treated them with dignity and respect.
  • 83% rated their child’s overall experience as seven out of ten or higher.
  • 88% of children felt involved in decisions about their care.

In comparison to other Trusts, we were better than most trusts for three questions, were worse or somewhat worse for seven questions and were in line with the majority of questions.

Feedback from the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) national survey, which is conducted every two years, will help us better understand what we’re doing well and where we need to do more to improve care across our hospitals.

Improved wi-Fi, flexible appointment times, more age-appropriate areas and more inclusive changing facilities were among some of the suggestions.

In response to the feedback, we have taken steps to improve our children’s care environments. This includes completely refitting the Acorn Children’s Unit at Whipps Cross Hospital and a new outdoor play area at The Royal London Hospital.

Kath Evans, director of children’s nursing, said: “We are so grateful to the children, young people and families who took the time to tell us about their care. We’re proud of the compassion and communication shown by our staff — and equally committed to acting on feedback to improve every child’s experience in our hospitals.”

Findings will also be shared with hospital leaders and teams with locally owned action plans developed to address the concerns raised.
