GP Nisa shares her pregnancy experience during a pandemic

Having a baby can be a daunting time for any mother, especially when faced with delivering during a global pandemic. We spoke with Nisa Aslam, a local GP who works at East One Health GP practice and The Royal London Hospital Out of Hours Department.

Nisa lives locally with her husband and two daughters and they are expecting their third baby in the February. Nisa said: “I trained as a GP at the London and was familiar with the Obstetrics team. I felt confident I would be in good hands as I believe the London obstetrics team are exceptional in their skills, research, knowledge, and professionalism.

“I heard from my patients and colleagues that certain obstetricians at the hospital were particularly amazing, so I was sure I wanted to have my babies there. I also love the beautiful, modern, new building and the squeaky-clean wards at The Royal London Hospital.”

Nisa had both her daughters at The Royal London Hospital and said: “I was really nervous when I was expecting my first baby and attended for my first booking appointment. I will never forget the understanding and kindness with which my midwife treated me.

“She immediately said to me ‘Don’t worry about a thing, we will fully respect and support your decisions relating to giving birth’.

“This was so reassuring as a nervous, first time mum-to-be. I went on to see other midwives and consultants who again supported my decisions around giving birth. They provided me with facts and information, but I never felt judged or pressured and even seven years down the line I am so grateful for this.”

Nisa shared that she has always felt supported and cared for from the minute she booked in, right until she delivered her babies. She said: “I have had severe hyperemesis gravidarum throughout all three pregnancies which has required repeat A&E attendance and prolonged hospital admissions. It’s strange being a doctor and a patient, you still feel so vulnerable.

“Every staff member I have encountered at the hospital has been professional, highly skilled and extremely caring. The most important thing for me, in times of sickness, is the empathy I receive from all the staff.

“Even during a pandemic, the staff have been treating me and other patients around me, with the same compassion and professionalism as ever. One of the obstetrics registrars realised I was nervous starting certain treatments so she researched the medications and printed medical articles I could read to feel reassured. For me this is personalised patient care.”

Nisa explained that the care during the pandemic has been slightly different, but is incredibly happy and grateful for all the care she received. She explained: “My booking appointment was over the phone, rather than face to face which I actually preferred.

“I have also had face to face appointments with the obstetricians and had my scans and felt very safe and satisfied with the care I received.

To be honest, in some ways, less visitors on the wards and in outpatients, makes a safer, calmer and nicer environment.”

Nisa explained that she is apprehensive about having her third child during the pandemic, as she hopes her husband will be allowed in theatre during her c-section. However, feels well informed about other aspects of her birth and said: “I have had letters informing me about future appointments and whether they will be face to face or via telephone, which is helpful.”

“I feel a really special connection with Barts Health and The Royal London Hospital. I trained here as a GP, have worked here for years, and have had my children here.

“It has been an honour and a blessing.”
