NHS75 photo competition finalists announced

We are thrilled to announce that six members of our Barts Health family have been shortlisted as finalists in the 'Our NHS at 75' photo competition. Their captivating photographs and the stories behind them truly showcase the incredible talent and passion within our organisation.

Let us introduce you to our finalists and their inspiring work:

Rebecca Albany, volunteer coordinator, St Bartholomew's Hospital

SBH main square

The reason I entered the competition is to show that even with all the chaos that can happen in the hospitals, they can still provide peace. I have grown up coming to Barts as some of my family work within the Trust. Being in the hospital has always had a homely feel to it that i just cant explain. St. Bartholomew's Hospital is the reason why I wanted to work in the Trust and it truly is a remarkable building.

Haidee Evangelista, staff nurse, Newham Hospital

Behind the Doors of Resilience: Two nurses radiating smiles, exemplify the unwavering spirit of camaraderie, belonging and support within the NHS. In the face of adversity, they remind us that positivity can thrive, creating a haven of compassion and resilience amidst the challenges nurses face. Together, they embody the indomitable spirit of healthcare professionals united in their mission to provide unwavering care to those who need it most.

Jose Hernandez, senior staff nurse, St Bartholomew's Hospital

It is a great honour and incredible experience to be part of this competiton. Although the environment looks chaotic and tight, nurses need to take a deep breath and reset themselves.

Priya Lankathilake, dentist, The Royal London Hospital

RLH dental hospital

I took this photo of the building I work in as the cherry trees always make me smile as I enter the building, particularly when in blossom. Even on a windy spring day I can’t help but laugh as I get showered with blossom petals as I arrive for work. I love nature photography, in particular of plants. I used the cherry trees to frame the hospital in my photograph to show the tranquility they bring to what is otherwise a busy urban environment.

Muhibur Miah, endoscopy scheduler, Newham Hospital

Ambulance

I decided to bring my camera in to work. On my lunch break I was roaming around the hospital searching for shots till I found an ambulance driver who was kind enough to allow me to take a picture of her smile. We ensure our patients and staff feel safe in our hands. A smile can go a long way for someone and the NHS is assured to help provide compassionate care.

Piotr Peksa, security officer, Mile End Hospital

HEMS

From June to October 2020, I voluntarily created hundreds of portraits of Barts Health members of staff to pay tribute to the "heroes" I worked with during the pandemic. On one of my night shifts I brought my camera to work and instead of taking my break, I snapped a few photos. I met HEMS members of staff in the RESUS back corridor. They looked to me like 3 heroes in action and I wanted to capture this moment for this very reason. I am hoping this picture will help raise awareness for HEMS, which is a charity and needs every possible supporter out there. Their mission is vital to saving lives.

Please take a moment to appreciate the incredible photographs captured by our finalists. We are immensely proud to have such talented individuals.

Each of the 75 shortlisted photographers has been invited to the launch event of ‘Our NHS at 75’ on the 4 July at the Fujifilm House of Photography, where the competition winners will also be announced and photographs displayed. This will be open to public viewing from the 5 July.

I love Haidee's photo. Reminds me of my time as a staff nurse at the Royal London - living and working overseas was a great experience.

Amazing photographs from all our colleagues which continue to make me proud to be Bart’s Health - especially proud of our Soft FM colleague Piotr’s submission - absolutely a Bart’s Hero too!
